Place Bellecour and Place des Terreaux

These are the two most beautiful squares in the city, held dear by Lyon's inhabitants, who like to meet up there before going out to one of the many bars or restaurants in the city.

Place Bellecourt is in the centre of the Lyon peninsula. It is the biggest square in the city and the largest pedestrian area in Europe.  It is the first step to old Lyon and its famous traboules, narrow passages through building courtyards that lead from one street to another. A feature specific to Lyon!

In the Place des Terreaux, you will be impressed by the majestic fountain, the work of sculptor Bartholdi, creator of the Statue of Liberty in New York. Opposite the fountain, the town hall nestles in a magnificent building. Turn your head and see the Palais Saint-Pierre, home to the Lyon museum of fine arts, open every day except Tuesday, from 10am to 6pm.

The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière

You can’t miss the basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière, designed by architect Pierre Bossan. It is the most visited building in the city, with reason, as it is superb!

Located on a hill overlooking Lyon, the basilica is the viewpoint for an incredible panorama.

To get to the Basilica, you have two solutions:

● from old Lyon, you can take the Chazeaux ascent and then pass through the Rosary Garden. The walk is very pleasant but you will need a little courage to climb the 228 steps!

● from Saint-Jean, you can take the funicular, which is just as pleasant and less sporty.

Once at the top, from the esplanade, you will have a beautiful unobstructed view of the city and you can then wander through the Parc des Hauteurs via the passerelle des quatre vents.

The Park of the Golden Head

One of the city's most famous urban parks, with 105 hectares of vegetation and a central lake.

You can rent a boat, have a run, visit the greenhouses containing a very beautiful collection of tropical plants and the rose gardens which are the pride of Lyon.  Children will love the Golden Head zoo, where entrance is free. It is home to more than 400 animals including giraffes, elephants, crocodiles...

Located in the north of Lyon, you can easily get there by car or by using the city's public transport services.

The park is open 365/7:
